The Dead Zone

During warm months, a temperature barrier traps the cold bottom layer and cuts off all oxygen. Bacteria thrive, fish die, and water quality collapses from the bottom up.

Toxic Sediment Release

Lake floor muck accumulates 1–3cm every year. In anoxic conditions, sediment releases more phosphorus into the water column — accelerating algae growth in a self-reinforcing cycle.

Chemical Treatments Backfire
